This is a very well-made tailboard camera of light construction made possible by having only a single extension. A similar camera is shown in early advertisements from Robinson. The Air Street address dates this to the first year of the Redding & Gyles partnership.

The wide cross front movement was for stereo use. There is no provision for a septum, the reversing back has a recess for a blanking-plate to be inserted which masks the left half of the plate (from the photographer's view point). In use the blanking-plate was put in place, the lens moved to the right and the shutter of the dark-slide fully removed. The right-hand exposure was made. For the next exposure the blanking-plate was removed, the lens pushed to the left and the draw slide pulled out half way, a notch in the slide indicates this. The negative would need to be transposed when printing.

The camera could also be used to take two half-plate (non stereo) exposures on a whole-plate. The lens is moved to the right and the blanking-plate inserted. The dark-slide can then be held in the reversing back in two positions by a spring catch engaging notches in the slide.
