The Ultramatic operated in semi-automatic exposure mode, after the shutter speed was manually set the iris was automatically set, determined by the exposure meter. It had an instant-return mirror and operated its lenses in fully automatic diaphragm (FAD) mode. The instant-return mirror must have caused problems as it was dropped in the next model (Ultramatic CS). For automatic setting to work lenses with a yellow spot on the bayonet are required.

The long telephoto lenses are beautifully finished, even the hoods have matching leather covering, they are, though, very heavy with large front optics and inadequate near focus. The lens hoods reverse over the lens when not in use, there is a screw thread in the hood for this.
