The Bessamatic was introduced in c. 1958. In specification it was similar to the Contaflex range from Zeiss and the Retina Reflex range from Kodak and aimed at the same market. The Bessamatic had a behind-the-lens Compur shutter allowing the lens to be fully removed, unlike the Contaflex.

The Bessamatic is a very easy camera to use with maybe the exception of the focusing grip on the lens. The later Ultramatic introduced automation to the range but was not so nice to use.

Bessamatic Models
  • Bessamatic c. 1958. Standard model with selenium cell metering.
  • Bessamatic De-Luxe 1962. Similar to the Bessamatic but with a small prism mounted outside the pentaprism housing which reflected the shutter and aperture settings into the view-finder.
  • Bessamatic m 1964. This was a budget version without a meter.
  • Bessamatic CS 1967. In this model the selenium meter was replaced by a through-the-lens (TTL) CdS version.

Microscope attachment
This consists of three parts: A connecting tube to attach to the microscope collar (part no. 127/33), a lens ring which screws to the lens to increase the diameter (part no. 145/22) and a focusing attachment (part no. 127/34) which connects to the camera lens ring and has a fixed glass plate to reflect the image to a telescope eyepiece. The eyepiece has cross hairs and a field outline. The focusing attachment is clamped to the tube 127/33, a stud fixes into a small hole in the tube for alignment. This is the same device as was used on the Prominent camera. A lens ring is required for the Bessamatic/Ultramatic to fix the focusing attachment to the lens either 145/22 for Color-Skopar and Color-Lanthar or 145/23 for Septon and Skopagon lenses.
