Meter Type:
Actinometer.

Calibration:
Plate speed: 1 - 400 Watkins. Shutter speed: 1 - 400 (1/1000 - 400/1000). Aperture: f8 - f90.

Attributes:
Actinometer value: 2 - 150.

This meter uses coiled sensitive paper rather than circular paper as in the Bee. In use the actinometer value is taken. The aperture is matched against the plate speed, the exposure time can then be read against the actinometer value.

Watkins Actinometer

1899

R. Field & Co.

Birmingham

England

Meter Type:
Actinometer.

Calibration:
Aperture: f6 - f64, ½ - 64 Watkins D numbers.

The patent of 1898 shows a similar but more complicated meter, that model is also shown in advertisements in 1900 - 1901. The patent does though mention a simplified form which describes this example. The actinometer value is taken in the usual way. The rear of the meter case carries a conversion scale of f numbers to Watkins D numbers. An equation stamped on the case - D/P x A = E shows how to calculate the exposure.

Meter Type:
Actinometer.

Calibration:
Plate speed: 11 - 500 Watkins. Shutter speed: 1/500 - 1800s. Aperture: f5.6 - f45.

Attributes:
Actinometer value: 1 - 180.

With:
Instruction book, Short instructions. Spare papers. Tin box.

In use the plate speed is set in a window, the aperture is set in another window. The light is measured on the actinometer paper, this value is set on a dial, the exposure time is then shown in a fourth window. The Dial replaced earlier watch type meters and was itself superseded by the Bee in 1902. The price was 8/6.

On later versions (c. 1903) of the meter there is a small metal stud to turn the front glass. A solid silver version was briefly advertised.
