Image of Lanternescope

Lantern slide viewer. Simple lens. Bellows focusing. The slide is lifted by a lever when a button is pressed. Slot for ground glass screen.

The angled mirror, as on this example, was added by early 1892 and also functions as a base for the viewer when in use. Some models are mounted on stands, others have binocular eye-pieces.

References & Notes:
AP Annual 1892, p. 391. Optical Magic Lantern Journal Mar/1892, p.48. An article states that the binocular form is to be introduced and that a reflector has been added to the mono version.

Further Information:
A similar example was sold at Christie's 14/10/1993, lot 18.
