Image of Lippmann Dark-Slide

Format:
3 ¼" x 4 ¼" plates.

In the Lippmann colour process the photograph was taken with the emulsion in contact with a layer of mercury. In the slide shown here, once the plate was loaded into the slide mercury was introduced through the fitting on the back of the slide, a tap allowed the mercury to be drained. The plate rests on a surround of chamois leather which creates the space for the mercury between the plate and the metal back of the slide.
